Loud as Glass!

Welcome,

A few weeks ago I visited a local second hand pop up store – these happen about once a month and I must say that visiting this and such other haunts has become a favourite pastime of mine.  I had been admiring a rather stunning bright green glass bottle over several months and on this occasion I decided to throw caution to the wind and buy it – it wasn’t expensive after all

IMG_3560

I had just the place in mind for it to sit – on my built in shelves in the lounge – for here I like to display various pieces that we have gathered throughout the years including this lovely specimen –

IMG_3561

which we picked up many years ago and I knew they would make good companions.

I also have a small tea light holder of the same colour which I have added on the middle shelf so bringing continuity and balance to the overall displayIMG_3563

and here is the overall look

IMG_3562

I’m so pleased that I bought this lovely curvaceous bottle as I think it really pulls the look together and as you can see we have crystals and precious stones on each of the shelves echoing the repetition theme of the green glass.

Also displayed we have some white ceramic and clear glass objects together with our silver goblets which I bought for our 25th wedding anniversary, and of course some obligatory candles!

Posh powder room

Welcome

It has been a while I must admit but I am excited to be writing to tell you all about a surprise interior project that took place at our abode prior to Christmas that I am just delighted about.

During last year I noticed I was reading a lot of articles about the smallest room in the house being the perfect place to be more adventurous with decor and to really punch some personality into the space.  I find myself more and more moving away from the sparse minimalist Scandinavian look that has been popular for so long and embracing this more opulent feel together with darker jewel colours .  Last summer I saw a picture of a bathroom that just inspired me.  It had a black and white floor just as our downstairs toilet but the walls were covered in a wonderful palm leaf wallpaper in greens and blues on a black background.  I suddenly had a lightbulb moment and thought that we could recreate this look within our downstairs cloakroom.

For as long as I can remember, well since we had our extension some 20 years ago, this room has been painted white with a chequered black and white tiled floor – and it has been great – this was just the look I wanted.  It has been redecorated in the same style over the years, particularly when in high winds the chimney came crashing down through the roof light!  It also houses a large black radiator, fancy black light and arched mirror with candle attachments – I had also added a pink towel and candles for contrast together with some posters brought back from a french holiday of some beautiful pink hydrangeas in full bloom.  However, change was abrewing……….hints started to be dropped – what did hubby think of this new idea – did he like the wallpaper? – ‘no’ was the answer – but could he be persuaded?!! I left the idea hanging in the air for several months, before picking it up again come the autumn – of course we both knew that there was a bit of a stumbling block – something that was going to take a lot more effort than a roll of wallpaper and lick of paint and that was to tackle the pipes that lay around the bottom of the wall – now of course this had always been an issue since we had the room built – but you know how it is – some jobs you just don’t get round to tackling and before you know it you become blind to them – well this was one of them.

Black Friday was on the horizon and I was toying with ordering some wallpaper at a good price – just to see of course…. and suddenly hubby sprung into action – so quickly that I had no time to take any ‘before’ photos! Well just this one as work was in progress…..

IMG_3408

He built up a wooden frame to hide the pipes – then the decision came as to whether to paint or tile – I was going to settle for paint as I thought it too much to ask him to tile – but luckily he decided to really go for it and take the pattern from the tiled floor up and over the new boxing and I am so glad he did – it looks great and well worth all the effort he put in x

IMG_3382

Next it was time to choose a paint colour – I was toying with a green to go with the leaf pattern but couldn’t find one that I liked and so decided to go with a rich blue colour and am just so happy with the result.

Initially I was wondering whether to wallpaper the whole room but just couldn’t justify the cost of doing this  with christmas on the horizon and so have just settled for wallpaper on the back wall.  The room now feels nicely cosy, although admittedly darker, but to me this is not an issue for the downstairs toilet.

And so the finished result …….

To finish the room off I have chosen a zingy orange towel and orange candles and have treated myself to a great little statue of a parrot on a perch  who sits guard in the corner!

In time I am hoping to add one or two jungle style framed prints but am more than happy with the outcome and the room just feels so much more cosy now.  Hubby has been a star finishing this off for me so that it was ready for our christmas guests.  Happy days! x

Our bedroom has now also been fully redecorated and I hope to be sharing this with you shortly on the blog.

Until next time………

Summer Vibes

Welcome or welcome back as I should say as it has been a while since I was last acquainted with my blog!  I guess sometimes no matter how gung-ho you are about a new venture (my blog in this case) and promise yourself you are going to keep the new routine going – some times life just gets in the way …………. and so I have been living – well working and living, doing the things I enjoy ….. and taking time to go on holiday:)

IMG_0457

Last month we had such a special holiday in the Scilly Isles.  For some years I had been thinking about booking a swim activity holiday but for reasons unknown even to myself had stalled on the idea,  but this year I just decided to go ahead and book it, because life is too short and I knew that I would live to regret it if I didn’t ever get around to challenging myself and hopefully having a great experience to remember.  I heard a saying recently ‘pure joy is on the other side of fear’ and this resonated with me – I hoped I would have this feeling once I had conquered riding with the waves – as I had not been sea swimming since I was a child.   I had also been hankering after visiting the Scilly Isles for some time – so why not combine the two!  This was all the reason I needed to up my swim training in the pool and by the time the holiday arrived I felt ready for the challenge with some trepidation.  The Scilly Isles sit to the south west of Cornwall and takes a 2 and a half hour ferry ride, or there is a small plane if you are not one for boats.  It is certainly not easy to get to and maybe that is what makes them so special.  It is like taking a trip back in time.  There are 140 islands altogether but only 5 are inhabited – with only the main island of St Mary’s having any kind of transport system.

IMG_2893

This is the path from our hotel to the beach – we swam back from the island you can see to the left of the photo

We stayed on the isle of St Martins in a luxury hotel perched right on the beach with a small group of like minded people and just had such a wonderful time swimming between islands, along bays, being driven by our own private speed boats to deserted islands for picnic lunch and then swimming to one of the other islands.  The water was cold but manageable in a wetsuit and was just so amazingly clear – we swam through seaweed and seagrasses which would normally freak me out a little but because we could see everything it just felt amazing.   On our last swim we headed out to the eastern isles to visit the seals and jumped into the water and bobbed along with them – just amazing!

Our guides were amazing hosts who stayed with us the whole time and organised for us to attend a comedy night on the island and also introduced us to the local jeweller on the island – just a small cottage that opens for a few hours a day – the jewellery is influenced by the surroundings and so there are charms of seashells, urchins, starfish, fishing boats etc.  However what caught my eye were the pebblestone charms (of course given the name of my blog!) Hubby bought me some of the earrings in advance for my birthday which I am not allowed to have yet!, but what really caught my eye was the ring.

IMG_3017

It was on display in silver – but all the rings I wear are gold – and so after great deliberation i decided to order one – and it has just arrived!!  I am so pleased with it – I will wear it all the time and will always be reminded of the special holiday we spent on the Isles of Scilly.

Whilst I was away I read a book – something I never normally have time for – a kind of self help book called Life Tonic by Jodie Shields who I have started following on Instagram.  It was such a pleasure to read – it is all about opening up to positivity and coming to terms with things that may have happened in your past and how Meditation can help you to restore more of an equlibium in your life.  I can’t say I have settled into a formal routine of meditation but I am definitely hoping to start practising on a regular basis and am feeling a positive happy chilled summer vibe.

How does this chilled summer vibe translate into my love of interiors?  Over the past few months I have been taking some inspiration from Instagram and have started following some vintage/bohemian sites.  I just love the way the style evolves over time and enjoys a mix of old and new with lots of comfy cosy places to rest and with lots of plants thrown into the mix the whole vibe just makes for relaxed times.  You may remember that some time back I began searching for a mid-century style bookcase for my new office space.  As yet I haven’t been able to find what I am looking for, but that is all part of the fun – the searching, the browsing in vintage and second hand shops.  I know I will get there eventually……….

My Surprise new Barcart!

Welcome,

There are several interior accessories and furniture items I am hankering after this year – one of which is a mid century bookcase – I have been hunting for one on-line and at local vintage fayres and antique centres for several months and thought I had eventually found ‘the one’ a couple of weeks ago, only to discover it was half an inch too wide for my space 😦   However this weekend I have had more luck with another item I have had my eye on – a bar cart or drinks trolley.  Yes it was on my wish list for this year but unfortunately not a high priority – as I am hoping, fingers crossed, that our bedroom redecoration will start within the next few months – so I couldn’t believe my luck last night, when walking to my daughter’s house for dinner I spotted one sitting on a front lawn in her road and at a price of around two large coffees!  It was getting dark by this time and upon knocking at the door the lady took it in for me to take a closer look.  Luckily it was a gold colour, and although a little larger than I was originally looking for, a gift like this could not be turned down!  It was kindly dropped round for me this morning and took around an hour for me to really clean it up but I am really chuffed with it.

img_2466

I have noticed from reading various blogs and from looking enviously through Pinterest that bar carts are very de rigour at the moment and thrown into this that I guess my one stems from around the 1970s – with vintage also being very on trend both in fashion and interiors my find could not be more perfect.

img_2472

Now you must understand that I am not a big drinker and some of those bottles I have had for years, but they do look the part!  From recently reading articles on ‘how to style your bar cart’ I followed the advice which includes using a tray to pull the look together, to have some pretty bottles and glasses, a cocktail shaker, something quirky to add personality, some art to give height and something living – although I have had to compromise on some of these a little I have taken bits and pieces I had lying around the house and am pretty pleased with the result, although hopefully I will be able to add/change items over time.

Homely Cosiness

Welcome, Here in the UK we have just endured a really cold spell of weather – waking up to harsh frosts each morning and the much berated defrosting of the car before starting out on our morning journeys.  However I am now trying to embrace these cold winter days – there is something to be said in the comfort of drawing the curtains or blinds in the late afternoon, shutting out the cold dark evenings and enjoying the ritual of lighting some candles and snuggling down on the sofa for the evening after changing into some comfy clothes and settling down with a nice warming drink and soft cushions and blankets.

The Danish term ‘Hygge’ has been much written about and its concept is being embraced by folk all around as we seek refuge from the daily grind of of work and commitments and teaches us to enjoy the moment spent in good company; to feel content and at ease.  It is about bringing a sense of balance and calm into your life.

img_2454

Candles are a relatively inexpensive way to bring around a sense of relaxed atmosphere into the home – their light is soft and soothing and a good scented one can give off a warming cacooning aroma that fills the house and makes for a relaxing atmosphere.  I love to burn the Winter candle by the White Company during the winter months.  It is infused with cinnamon, clove and orange and literally burns for hours.  It is also more soothing to have small pools of light to complement the candles – turn the overhead light off or have on a dimmer and have glowing lamps dotted around the house.  Make your surroundings homely with personal photographs and souvenirs and piles of cosy blankets and cushions.  Hanging out together in the kitchen is at the core of the ethos of Hygge.  Maybe drinking some wine whilst pitching in and making a meal with your loved ones and then sharing the fruits of your labour whilst enjoying each other’s company – this is the best way to keep those chilly nights at bay.  Indulge in some home cooking – a hearty warming homemade soup paired with some crusty bread is perfect for a weekend meal.

img_2450

Some of my favourite Hygge images from the internet:

Of course to balance the snuggly cosy feelings of Hygge – it is also important to get outside and on a crisp sunny winter’s morning there is nothing better to get out for a good long walk to make the most of the rays of sunshine that are all too few and far between at this time of year.  Maybe the walk could even finish at a favourite country pub with Sunday lunch in front of a roaring fire!  After a bit of a lull I have started getting out for a run again and am enjoying the cold crisp weather especially when I know there is a nice bowl of hot porridge waiting for me at the end.  Here are some photos from a recent run – the frost makes everything look magical.

Of course, as much as most people I am looking forward to the first signs of Spring but with a positive outlook winter does not have to be something to be endured – we must make the most of each season enjoy the nuances of each one – so here’s to a happy Hygge:)

Colours for the year 2017

Welcome, You may have seen that there has been much written over the past few weeks about popular colour predictions for the year, so I thought I would take the opportunity to put my spin on it.

I guess Pantone is the most revered colour system throughout the world.  This American based company has a colour matching system which produces a standardised colour reproduction system.  Pantone colours are described by their allocated number and since the year 2000 the Pantone Colour Institute declares a ‘colour of the year’ – many ‘colour trending’ representatives meet to forecast what colours will be popular in the coming year.  The colour chosen for 2017 is Greenery, a fresh yellowy-green shade – which after the uncertain times of 2016 represents growth, harmony, freshness…..

I have always shied away from using green in my interiors – once upon a time I painted a north facing room green, and it just felt too cold – and this has put me off using it – until now that is!  Not that I would necessarily paint my walls green, but small steps at a time.  Last year I started adding more houseplants to my home

img_1463

again this is all about bringing harmony and balance to our homes and neutralising our spaces against all of our electrical devices that we surround our lives with and will continue to be a huge trend in 2017.   I will be looking to add some more plants during the year but one look I am hankering after at the moment is a green velvet sofa – I am seeing these pop up everywhere – in magazines, pinterest, other interior blogs –

green-sofa-1

Not that in reality I can afford to change the sofas in my living room, but I do like this look –  I love the first picture – the bright green really pops against the dark grey wall, but I have also seen pictures of a lighter green velvet sofa against a soft pink back drop that looked stunning – I can only dream……….

Dulux have chosen the colour Denim Drift as their colour of the year following their review of international architecture, fashion and design which revealed that blue is the colour of the moment.

Dulux have also developed a colour palette of complementary of tones and hues as a fresh approach to combining colours.  I do like this colour – quite contemporary and a good midway colour between light and the dark colours that are so popular at the moment.  I notice upon flicking through my monthly magazines that there is also a lot of denim on the fashion pages too – of course denim never goes out of fashion – but new ways of wearing denim from jumpsuits to blouses, skirts and new shapes for our beloved jeans.  It seems we won’t be able to escape it in 2017.

Just this week the wonderful Farrow and Ball paint company announced their stand out colours for this year.  They believe that people will continue to embrace colour.  They have picked 4 key colours for this year – including dark vivid hues Radicchio and Studio Green

and the subtler tones of Hay and All White.  They believe these colours are suited to both contemporary and more traditional homes and have an enduring appeal.

It is interesting to see that green is coming through again, although this time in a much darker hue than Pantone’s Greenery, but dark wall colours do seem very on trend at the moment.  I love this dark green kitchen:

I also love a dark red such as radicchio in a dining room setting – it provides an intimate cosy atmosphere  which in turn must be good for feeding the soul- and the palette!dark-red-dining-room

Snug Room Make-over

Welcome, apologies that several weeks – and more time than I would have hoped – have yet again past since my last post……they have passed by in a haze of learning a new job, getting to know our new puppy, Christmas and… decorating!  Yes, I have finished painting my ‘snug’ room and am pretty pleased with the result!

img_2328

Before I go any further, here are some before pictures:

In the past I have been an advocate for painting my rooms in light colours – in fact at one time I wanted to paint the whole house white!  But more recently I have been embracing the dark side – maybe it is the time of year but there seems to be a whole movement on the pros of decorating our rooms dark, comforting colours.

img_2330

The main advocate for this school of thought is Abigail Ahern – she is a stylist and designer who runs her own shop, website and blog.  During the summer when I was in London I went to visit her shop in Islington and although not huge it was stuffed with sumptuous rugs, cushions, furnishings that had plenty of colour and texture and I was smitten.  She also has her own paint range and as well as advising on painting rooms in these bold, dark colours, she recommends that you paint the ceiling the same colour to really immerse yourself and make the room one whole.  I was tempted to try this but was a little worried that the room would look out of place as all the other ceilings in my house are white and I knew from the start that hubby would find this idea one step too far, but can see her wisdom behind her thinking – her shop is painted dark grey with the colour being taken onto the ceiling and I think it looked fab!  A link to here website is here Abigail Ahern.  She also sells a range into Debenhams if you so happen to like quirky velvet covered animal lamps and cushions.

I had been tempted to cover one wall in wallpaper as a nod to a feature wall, but after many hours of looking could just not find one that I liked in my price point.  Another blog that I follow, Swoonworthy where the writer Kimberley has decorated her dining room this year has a feature wall of mesmerising wallpaper, but when I researched this and found it was nearly £100 per roll it was just out of my budget.  I figured that as there is a brick wall in the room (that is painted) I didn’t want too many styles and features as it is quite a small room.

As for colour – I have gone with Farrow and Ball paints – my little bit of luxury – all made in Dorset and a lovely texture.  After going through several tester pots I settled for Plummet – a lovely dark grey – this room has undergone several transformations since living in the house – from children’s play room, to teenage hangout den to office – and most lately it had been painted white – when I first painted the above mentioned brick wall I was a little nervous – but I knew painting it white was fairly safe – but now painting it dark grey I was unsure, but am so pleased I bit the bullet.  The room is definitely feeling much cosier.  I also had a grey wooden desk in the room but it was the wrong shade of grey – too insipid, and so I decided to paint it in a dark aubergine gloss which looks amazing alongside the dark grey.

So now the hard work was done, it was time to add the fanciful pieces.  For the most part I have repurposed the pieces that I already had – just a change of position here and there – it has made all the difference.  I have purchased a couple of side tables from Next that fit the room perfectly and have also gone to Next for some curtains and curtain pole.  My idea was for the curtains to ‘pool’ onto the floor but they are a bit long even for that and so will have them taken up a touch in the new year.

I am using a copper colour as my accent and hope to gather a few bits over the coming weeks.

The old rug has gone back down for the moment, I quite fancy a cow hide in the room but again am mindful that it might just look too much in the space so I shall wait and see.  The item I am stuck on at the moment is a bookcase.  As our house was built at the beginning of the 1960s I thought that I should aim to obtain a piece from the era to add a bit of nostalgia to the room – recently I went to a large antique centre but there was little to choose from and after ploughing through e-bay and the internet for hours I still have not found a piece to suit.  I don’t really know what I am looking for but it is one of things that I will know it when I see it.  I am now of the mind that I may have to buy something new that is styled in the modernist way.  So watch this space…….

Just prior to Christmas I also decorated the small room that leads into my new snug, this leads out from the kitchen and it has always just been a walkthrough, or somewhere that the dogs hang out!  Again this was painted white and I have gone for ‘Brassica’ – another Farrow and Ball colour which I think looks perfect when looking through into my snug room – I will just give you a sneak peak of the colour as it looks on the wall, as I have yet to style this room – again I am looking for some nice mid-century (if possible) furniture – a display cabinet is what I have in mind – I may also add curtains and a large picture – so I don’t want to reveal the whole room just at the moment – I think it could take me a couple of months to save up and source the pieces – so hope to bring this to you in the Spring.  Notice how the colour looks different in the photos below dependant on the light and shade:)

To finish up for today, I would just like to say that although my blog tailed off towards the end of last year, I am hoping to be more prolific in the weeks to come and to get back on track once again.  So, until next time…………

Catch up time!

Welcome to my blog.  After my last promise of hoping to write more frequently I realise that several weeks have gone by again with not so much as a single post:(  Life has just gotten so hectic, as much as I have good intentions they just keep getting scuppered!  But I did want to write and let you know about my amazing holiday in Lake Garda before the memories fade too far into the distance!

After our holiday to Sorrento last year which was my first trip to Italy I just fell in love with the Country and it’s beautiful architecture, I had been wanting to visit for a long time and I wasn’t disappointed, so this year’s trip to Lake Garda was another location I was longing to explore.  We stayed in the south eastern side of the lake  in a town called Descenzano.

img_1802

The weather was mainly sunny, although we did experience a couple of amazing downpours which literally flooded the streets!

img_1834

During the course of the week we managed to fit in a day trip to Verona, a full day trip around the lake, mostly by coach, but including a boat trip around the north of the lake, a half day visit to a winery.  We also took a bus to Riva del Garda which is on the same side of the lake a little further north, I was interested as it was one of the places I was interested in staying.  Here we visited some amazing botanical gardens and a very interesting ‘Ritornale’ – a Portmerion style set of buildings and gardens which was a a real find.

Finally we took a boat over to the other side of the lake and then walked about 6 miles along the promenade through a couple of towns to reach Garda – and the boat back to our hotel.  One thing which was very noticeable was the amount of dogs out and about – during one evening I counted over 40 out and about for an evening stroll!

Luckily we did managed to have some chill out time too with swims in the hotel pool and eating out every night – although as a vegetarian this proved a bit tricky – with pasta and pizza being the only real options for me – and hence why I am now on a self imposed diet!

Almost as soon as we hit english soil it was time to collect our new puppy – meet Poppy our gorgeous new cocker spaniel puppy.

img_2161

She is a lovely soft bundle of fun and mischief and love, and a pleasure to have around, although those little sharp teeth of hers are to be avoided if possible!  If having a new puppy around the place was not enough to deal with, when I returned to work I started my new role which I am enjoying but there is a lot to learn and I am coming home exhausted:(  I had good intentions of catching up with this blog on Monday evening but ended up falling asleep in the armchair!  Oh dear, a sign of the times!  Hopefully things will settle down soon x

In other news – well there has not been time for much other news, but I am hopeful to start my redecoration of my ‘snug’ room soon – I have set myself a deadline of christmas – which is starting to loom large in front of us – I bought the paint before going away but life has been so hectic lately all I have had time for is putting some undercoat on the windowsill! So more on this front soon hopefully……..

I have also signed up for a free course which starts next week!  Crazy I know, with no spare time but I’m sure it will be very interesting – it is called the Power of Colour – and is an on-line course and will consist of teaching and inspirational videos, articles, quizzes, and discussions and assignments.  The course is run by Future Learn and I am hoping it will reignite my passion for this aspect of interior living/styling.  I am pleased to say that a couple of ladies at work have been asking me for help in choosing paint colours for their hallways and it is one of my favourite aspects of interior design so I am always open to learning more about the subject.

Through reading other interior/style blogs I have also signed up to receive tips for blogger newcomers about creating content and keeping the momentum going, so hopefully I can post more regularly again in the near future.

Until then…………

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Welcome

If you are anything like me, I’m sure you will agree that the last few weeks have passed by in a flash – it certainly feels like we have enjoyed a good summer this year, despite all that rain throughout June!  I feel guilty that I haven’t updated the blog in a while, but I found that what with working full time, and getting out and about during the weekends, I was getting very little time to write my blog….. and this began stressing me out, which is not supposed to be the idea, when I started the blog I wanted it to be a fun hobby……. and so I decided to put it on the back burner for a few weeks and enjoy my summer, and now as Autumn approaches hopefully I will get fired up with enthusiasm for it again:)

You may be wondering what has been taking up my blog writing time, so I just thought I would take a few sentences to let you know what I have been up to – and my plans for the coming months.  Well, there have been several trips out on our tandem bike, great rides on sunny days, through straw coloured fields with white fluffy clouds above, the breeze on my face and feeling like I don’t have a care in the world, just great!   A weekend in Norfolk visiting the National Trust’s Blinkling Estate and taking part in a 40 mile Tour de Broads bike ride.

Time catching up with old friends, visiting London to watch the Proms – a new experience for me – and also to visit the V&A museum for their ‘Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear’ exhibition.

I have to say that after some rather humid, sticky weeks in the office I am rather looking forward to Autumn – it is my favourite time of year – well, it is my birthday month after all!  I just love the warmer range of colours from ochres, through to forest greens and burgandys both in clothing and interiors – the touch of a scarf around the neck, the feel of faux fur and the comforting effect of pulling on your trusted old cardigan.  I love the smells of autumn with its woody, earthy scents. I still have a feeling like September is the beginning of a new term, full of new opportunities and possibilities.  For me this year it will mean a new job – an internal move but working within a legal property department – not exactly interiors – but that’s ok, as I find all things property endlessly fascinating:)Image result for next autumn interiors

Autumn.1

Our other exciting news is that we are getting a puppy!  Last Christmas our beloved cocker IMG_1764spaniel, Lilly, passed away very suddenly and the whole family was distraught.  We needed some breathing space  to grieve and remember her; for us life without a dog is not complete, and we feel the time has now arrived for us to welcome another bundle of joy.  So Poppy will be joining us towards the end of the month after our holiday.   We now have a few weeks to make the house ‘puppy proof’ – I have a feeling my nice new kitchen chairs will have to be packed away for a while!

In other news I am making plans to decorate my ‘snug’ – this has been a while coming – I was hoping to start this straight after we decorated the kitchen, but time and cash constraints have meant it being postponed – but I am looking forward to sharing my plans with you over the coming weeks – a word of warning – I am going dark!

Finally, I have been inspired over the summer by the recent phenonenum here in the UK who is Joe Wicks or ‘The Body Coach’.  If you follow social media you won’t be able to miss him and he even has a TV show.  I am inspired by his healthy eating and HIIT exercise regimes and will start in earnest when I return from my holiday as I need to fit back into my jeans before the winter!

Well, that is a round-up of my summer, I hope to start writing more regularly once again so see you back here again soon:)

Summer Lovin’

Welcome, summer has been late to arrive in the UK this year with what must have been the wettest June on record but at last it eventually feels as though summer has arrived this week where most areas have been sizzling in temperatures topping 30 degrees centigrade!  Whilst it is lovely to see the sun it was a tad too warm for me I’m afraid but it was good to come home from work to a cool shower.  But it got me thinking about how we can make little tweaks in our homes once the sun starts shining to enjoy the brighter, warmer days and to take time to appreciate the smells and sounds of the summer.

One instant way to welcome in the warmer longer days is have a change of bedlinen, cushions and curtains, – the rooms will look brighter and feel much lighter and fresher.  You may have wool or felt cushions for the winter season and changing them up for some lighter linen ones will be an instant mood changer.  I love to see a long light organza curtain gently blowing in the breeze.

IMG_1704

Come the summer months I also make sure I change my candles for a lighter fresher fragrance – a citrus scent is perfect for long sunny days and is bound to lift your mood.

Fresh flowers are always welcoming at any time of year but in the summer I like to cut a IMG_1699few from the garden – just a few small stems is often all that is needed for a homely feeling.

I guess the key is to make the most of your outside space – until a few years ago the area outside my back door was bare and forgotten, but these days I like to fill it with plants and it provides a welcome view when I look through my door, or walk through the side gate.

One thing that I have learnt as the years have gone by is to take the time to enjoy the simpler things in life as it rushes past so quickly when we are busy at work and looking after family.  During the warmer months I like to take a quick 5 minutes in the garden to eat my breakfast and listen to the birds and appreciate my garden.  It just gives me a few minutes of calm before the start of a busy day.  During the weekends I will linger for longer and enjoy a read of my magazine!

Of course I have a wishlist of items that may make my time outside a little more appealing.  I am really hankering after a pretty bistro set of table and chairs together with an outside rug – although I may have to put them on the back burner until next year as I am now saving up to be able to decorate my office/chill out room – but more about that in the coming months!

Of course if money were no object then it would be amazing to have a fully inside/out kitchen with bi-fold doors complete with outdoor cooking facilities.  Having said that I have never been a huge fan of BBQs what with being vegetarian, but it is good to dream!

Of course no summer would be complete without a glass or two of Pimms and lemonade! IMG_1719

Cheers! – please let me know your favourite summer hints and tips, I would love to hear them.

Until next time………..
